Musician and Composer İlhan Mimaroğlu Passes Away

(1926-2012)

We are deeply saddened by the death of musician and composer and member of the Advisory Board of Moon and Stars Project İlhan Mimaroğlu. The 86 year-old musician, internationally known for his compositions in which he utilized electronics, was equally at home producing records for major popular and jazz artists, including many who were signed to Atlantic Records. As an executive and in-house producer for Atlantic he was responsible for recordings of Charles Mingus, Modern Jazz Quartet, John Cage, Eric Salzman, Luciano Berio, Idil Biret, Meral Güneyman, Vladimir Ussachevsky. Janis Siegel, and many others. He also collaborated with Jean DuBuffet on Coucou Bazar at the Guggenheim museum. His own label, Finnadar, that specialized in contemporary works, was highly respected for its innovative and important recordings. Mr. Mimaroğlu both studied and taught at Columbia University, was active in the Columbia-Princeton Electronic Music Center and has lectured and written widely on music. In 2008 Moon and Stars Project of The American Turkish Society co-sponsored a tribute to the life and work of İlhan Mimaroğlu by concert pianist Meral Güneyman. Our deepest condolences go out to his beloved wife Güngör Mimaroğlu and his family and friends.

Memorial:

A memorial will be held at Riverside Memorial Chapel 180 West 76th Street on Friday, July 20th at 1:00 pm. Following the memorial the burial will take place at Ferncliff Cemetery at 280-284 Secor Road, Hartsdale, NY 10530.
